The much anticipated 2012 season opener is soon upon us. How soon? Well, it's right around the corner: February 11, 2012 at Fair Park Coliseum.

The Bombshell Brigade will be facing off against Viva La Revolucion! and the 2011 IntraLeague Champions, the Deadly Kennedys, will take on the Lone Star Assassins. We will also be announcing our newest team, Ruby's Revenge!

Half-time show will be performed by Missile and the soundtrack to the evening is provided by DJ Woodtronic of the 89.3FM KNON's Sonic Assembly Power Hour.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online at www.acderby.com or in person at Pluckers (on Greenville and Lovers) and Dad’s Broadway Skateland in Mesquite. Tickets are also available at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/213199. Ticket prices are $15 for general stadium seating and $18 for floor seating. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $2 more the day of the bout. Fair Park Coliseum is located at 1438 Coliseum Drive, Dallas, TX 75210. On bout days, doors open at 5:15 p.m. and bouts begin at 6:00 p.m.

Now that we are all rested from an exciting weekend of Governor's Cup, we'd like to thank EVERYONE (and I mean everyone) who came and participated in this awesome event!! We could not have done this without the help of Team Zebra, the NSOs, our wonderful sponsors, the fans, and the skaters who traveled from near and far to participate! We also can't forget our own people who sacrificed their time and labor to make this happen!

Day One started at 8AM! First to play was Alamo City Rollergirls out of San Antonio and Oklahoma City Roller Derby. Ending score was 170 to 83, Alamo advancing.

The 2nd bout was Assassination City Roller Derby against Northwest Arkansas Roller Derby. This was a close one but Assassination City came out ahead, 160 to 123. Assassination City advances.

The third bout of the day featured Duke City Derby and the Oklahoma Victory Dolls. Derby Phil wrote that this was probably the most competitive bout of the day. The final score: 141 to 118 with Duke City advancing.

The fourth bout was Assassination City Roller Derby and Alamo City Rollergirls. Assassination City remained undefeated for Day 1 with a score of 172 to 92.

At the next bout, it was the nationally ranked 4th in the country, Texas Rollergirls Texacutioners against Duke City Derby. Duke gave it their all but could not make it past the defense of the Texies. Final score was 243 to 36.

Last bout of the day was Northwest Arkansas Roller Derby and Oklahoma Victory Dolls. Arkansas ended their day with a win, 186 to 75.

Day Two also started at 8AM with Duke City Derby playing against Oklahoma Victory Dolls. Duke City for the win, 235 to 84.

Second bout of the day was Northwest Arkansas Roller Derby and Alamo City Rollergirls. Arkansas advanced with their score of 147 to 130.

Third bout featured Assassination City Roller Derby and Texas Rollergirls Texacutioners. Texas moves to the Championship bracket with their huge win of 337 to 46.

The fourth bout consisted of Duke City Derby and Northwest Arkansas Roller Derby. Arkansas finished in 4th place, losing to Duke. Final score was 215 to 77.

In the next bout, Assassination City Roller Derby and Duke City Derby fought it out ending with Assassination City in 3rd place. Duke advances to the championship round, 144 to 101.

And now the Championship, Texas Rollergirls Texacutioners and Duke City Derby. We have to give some props for Duke on this one. They skated 3 bouts on Sunday before this one, 2 were back to back. Now they are on their 3rd bout in a row!! They were allowed a 1 hour break before facing off with the Texies but Duke was like, "Nah, just give us 30 minutes." They fought hard but Texas just would not relinquish the trophy. Duke placed in second, 297 to 56, which was a 20 point improvement from their previous bout with Texas on Saturday. Texas also improved on their score by 54 points.

It was an amazing tournament! Thanks again to everyone who made this happen!

Sunday night, Jan. 29, after Governor's Cup has wrapped, make sure you hit the BIG AFTERPARTY at the Double Wide Bar! Entrance to the main bar is free, but you DEFINITELY wanna see Graceland Ninjaz perform in the venue for $5. Also, food will be available for purchase by the Easy Slider Food Truck!

My Possibilities is a day program that enables adults with disabilities that ability to realize their greatest possibilities and enjoy meaningful lives. They aspire to be recognized as the leader and benchmark for continued education for adults with disabilities.

We had a great turn-out for Toys for Tots! Although it was disappointing not to have an actual Marine there (Princess Peaches N'Pain was near tears), we managed to collect almost 5 boxes of toys and raised over $200 in cash donations. Thanks to everyone who came out!!

Peaches managed to smile after Santa promised to bring her a Marine next year!

Referees Scooter and Rota Fury requested new whistles for the upcoming season.

Assassination City Roller Derby, Dallas’ only women’s flat track roller derby league, is pleased to announce “Crusin’ for a Bruisin’” the highly-anticipated last bout of the year at historic Fair Park Colliseum on November 19, and this time, we're bringing you a TRIPLE HEADER bout!

Your turkey legs and Yule logs just wouldn’t be the same without getting your derby fix in before year ends. Get your pre-holiday jollies by joining us in this exciting evening which will feature Dallas’ Assassination City Roller Derby All-Star travel team, Special Ops, facing off against Oklahoma City Roller Derby. Also scheduled to bout is another Oklahoma/Texas rivalry, Assassination City Roller Derby's B-team, Dirty Little Secret Service vs. the Enid Rollergirls from Enid,OK, and, capping off the triple header is a home bout by Dallas' men's roller derby league, Dallas Deception. This marks the first appearance of men's roller derby at Fair Park Colliseum, and Assassination City is happy to host them!

Although the home team season has ended, Assassination City Roller Derby has some high-intensity action in store for you as our All-Star Team, Special Ops, enters its season.

Assassination City's all star travel team Special Ops will be playing the Texas Roller Girls home team, the Honkytonk Heartbreakers. We'll also introduce you to some of our newer skaters in our annual Cougars vs. Kittens mashup!

Assassination City Roller Derby invaded Dallas Summer Musical’s The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber last night and it answered the question posed in the title. I have fractured my tailbone, dislocated my knee cap, and had rink rash on top of a foot-long road burn….none of which made me even tear. Well, besides being clocked in the jaw by Trigger Mortis, almost nothing has made me tear on the track. There isn't much that we AC Derby girls can't handle, but last night as Howard McGillin reprised his role as the Phantom from the Phantom of the Opera for two great songs, the flood gates opened.

The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber is for the person who shares my secret shame of knowing multiple ALW musicals by heart and randomly breaking out in song and dance down the cubicle aisle at work. (You know who you are!) It brings us to the roots that of ALW’s genius; his music.

The show is stripped of costumes, acting, and props. It brings us to the roots that of ALW’s genius; his music. So what makes this show awesome? The Dallas Summer Musical Orchestra is set up on stage instead of below, giving all the musicians their moment in the spotlight. The unsung heroes finally have their day! (Remember to thank the AC Derby’s volunteers! They are the unsung heroes of derby) Watching each musician play with such precision and expertise was amazing! When the violinists moved their bows in unison, when the cellist fingers fluttered quickly up and down the neck so effortlessly, with the percussionist paying meticulous attention to the timing of every cymbal crash is as beautiful as watching Special Ops perform the perfect frontal block and sweep and taking the opposing jammer out!

The singers shined as well! Charlie Pollock sang the best Gethsemahe from Jesus Christ Super Star I have ever heard in any stage production, EVER. He even hit the high note that Ted Neeley perfected in the 1973 movie, and it sent shivers up my spine. In a good way, not the way you feel after being slammed to the wall. Kathy Vyoto sang You Must Love Me from Evita that was so powerful; it actually made me begin to forgive Madonna for butchering the song and reinstated my love for Evita. And how could you pay tribute to Andre Lloyd Webber without including a collection from the infamous Phantom of the Opera. Howard McGillin, who has played the famous opera ghost over 2500 times, lent his voice once again to songs such as Phantom of the Opera and Music of the Night. As he commanded his Christine to sing in Phantom of the Opera, the goosebumps appeared and multiplied as he continued to order his angel of music to sing for him. During Music of the Night, I'll admit, I closed my eyes, pretended that I was Christine and the phantom was singing to me in his lair. “Where in the Hell could I skate in his lair?” did pop up in my head, but I was swiftly carried back into my day dream by his seductive voice. And this is when the tears began to flow. It all began to overwhelm me, the beauty of the music, his voice, and the lyrics.

Whether or not you’re an ALW fan, it’s hard to deny that he is a pioneer of musical theater and his music is so profound, it can make even a derby girl cry.

A Review of the Dallas Summer Musicals' "Xanadu", as seen through the eyes of a roller derby skater

We've all seen Xanadu, the movie...or at least a montage of cheesy clips from it, with Olivia Newton John roller skating (with VERY minimal skills) in a roller disco that time forgot. Not many people would willingly list Xanadu as their favorite movie if asked, so when the league I skate for, Assassination City Roller Derby, had an outing to see the Dallas Summer Musical's production of the show, I was admittedly skeptical and anxious. I have an irrational fear of being embarrassed for actors on stage when the play is a bomb. But from the very beginning, when Sonny, the easy to love "Danny Zuko meets Spicoli" protagonist, scurried out on stage and did the bend-and-snap in the shortest pair of jean shorts I'd ever seen this side of Daisy Duke, it was clear that I'd found a satirical delight. The self aware comedy never pretended to be anything other than an entertaining, sarcastic romp through a bad 1980's film, and, oh how I loved it for that. It took the most ridiculous parts of the movie, put them in a blender and poured out pure fun.

There were demigods. There were disco balls. There were purposely bad Australian accents. And, best of all, there were roller skates! As a skater myself, it felt like Disneyworld for derby girls. By the end of the show, I was up on my feet...laughing, dancing and testifying like I was in some kind of cult. And, in a funny way, I was. I looked around at my derby sisters, and noticed that they were on their feet dancing and clapping. Yep...they drank the Kool-Aid, too.

After tonight's Dallas Summer Musicals performance, consider us now members of a cult. The cult of Xanadu. Want to become a member, too? You only have a few more days to do it!

For some reason, every year, the good folks at All-Con allow us to invade their convention and wreak havoc all along the way as we present live-action roller derby demos all weekend. It's an Assassination City tradition!

Can you commit to 2-4 practices a week?

Can you demonstrate basic skating skills? (we can teach you the hard hitting stuff!)

Primary insurance is recommended, but not required.

ACRD to host the "Keep Dallas Deviant" Art Show & Auction at Club Dada

Dallas has always been a hotbed of eclectic and edgy artists, photographers, musicians and restaurants, and for one night only, the ladies of Assassination City Roller Derby will bring them all together to showcase new and original Kennedy Conspiracy and roller derby inspired art for the very first “Keep Dallas Deviant” Art Show and Auction at Club Dada on the evening of Friday, Feb. 27.

With celebrity artists like John Gonzales (aka Diablo Texas) and Anna Gonzales, web producer from cbs11tv.com, and familiar faces like, Scotty Mankoff (crazypictureguy.com), and Khurk Maeder, your favorite Monday night bartender at the Doublewide, you’re sure to get an eyeful of art with a fresh perspective on Dallas’ seedy underbelly and mysterious past ala Kennedy. Given the theme, it is only apropos that the savvy ladies of Assassination City Roller Derby and the artists of the evening are donating proceeds of the art auction to the Oak Cliff Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to renovating the historic Texas Theatre (where Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested) to its original 1963 appearance.

Plans are on deck to have a “live art” section in the main room at Club Dada, with eccentric artist Isaac Brown painting roller girls’ bodies for a large interactive piece and derby girls skating across canvas to create roller derby art custom for the lucky buyer. Ask Trigger Mortis about Assassination City’s vision for the gallery show, and she is more than willing to share it. “When you walk into the Keep Dallas Deviant gallery show, you will feel that you are in the creative epicenter of Dallas. We wanted to showcase all of the hardworking artists and musicians that make Dallas’ underground heart beat.”

And the beat you will hear with bands on stage like Escort Service, Charles Mancini and Children of the Grave (a children’s Black Sabbath tribute band). Don’t be surprised if you fall in love with the lovely Velvet Kittens Burlesque performing at intermissions throughout the night. Snag a handful of hors d’oeuvres from local restaurants as the trays pass through the room, sip on a cocktail and chat with the artists about their work.

Club Dada is located at 2720 Elm St, Dallas, TX 75226 and on Friday, Feb. 27, its gallery opens for the “Keep Dallas Deviant” art show at 7:30pm. While you’re there, grab an auction program, make sure your wallet is full, and eye your favorite piece of art, as the cash-only bidding starts at 9pm. $10 cover charge goes to benefit the Assassination City Roller Derby travel team and to cover their travel expenses as they represent Dallas in roller derby bouts across the country.

Assassination CIty Celebrates the 2008 Champions and the 2009 Calendar!

The Bombshell Brigade pulled out an amazing 116-32 victory over the Lone Star Assassins on Saturday night, Nov. 15, claiming their rightful place as Assassination City Roller Derby's 2008 Champions. Key jammers for the Bombshells were Harassiz Mine and Vanna Rockin' and some of their key blockers were Mona Brus'r and LuAnn Splatter. The Lone Star Assassins fought hard in the first half, with Brandi Danger, Pyro Maim Ya and Mia Hammer jamming for points with the help of blockers Kernal Angus and rookie, the Dixie Witch. Although LSA started strong, it was the well-oiled machine maneuvering and exceptional teamwork of the Bombshell Brigade that finally tired out the bad girls of derby and cinched the championship.

Congratulations to the Bombshell Brigade on their very first Championship win, and to Assassination City Roller Derby for ending the season with a BANG!

Although the 2008 season has drawn to a close, the ladies of ACRD never stop rollin'. As we say goodbye to 2008, we say HOWDY! to 2009 with our new KICK ASS calendar. The Assassination City Roller Derby 2009 calendar is finally out, and it is COOL AS HELL! And there will be some seriously wicked skating moves, with a portion of theproceeds going to the Dallas Women's Foundation.
